One of the best pieces of advice my mother ever gave me was this: “Never leave the house without your lipstick on.” She’d learned it from my grandmother and wanted to pass the wisdom down to me.
I was fifteen at the time, and had just started wearing sheer pink lip gloss that tasted like sparkly strawberries. “Try something a little bolder,” my mom said, “Don’t be scared of being noticed.”
With my red lips, I felt like I could take over the world, and I’ve been proudly wearing it ever since.
It takes a special kind of woman to pull off red lipstick. We are a breed apart, and a rare breed at that. If you can find a woman who truly knows how to rock a crimson pout, hold on to her tight because she’s a special one. Women who can confidently wear red lipstick on a regular basis make the very best partners, girlfriends, wives, and friends. Here are ten reasons why:
It takes a certain level of self-assuredness to wear a dominant pop of color right in the middle of your face. Women who love red lips aren’t timid wallflowers. We speak our needs, air our grievances, and take charge of a situation without drama.
Here’s another secret: on the days when we feel like we just can’t get out of bed and go on, we know if we put our best face forward (meaning the face with red lipstick) that we can fake it ‘til we make it, because red lipstick is instantly empowering.
Try to picture women who are absolute icons of style. Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Coco Chanel, Anne Hathaway, Madonna, Adele, Reese Witherspoon… I could go on forever. All of them were (or are) proud lovers of red lips and every single one of them have been considered trendsetters, trail-blazers, ahead of their times, and brave, beautiful role models. They are leaders, not followers.
We never go out of style and we love the classics. Let’s just say that red lipstick doesn’t exactly go with an orange spray tan, platinum hair extensions, bright blue, fake eyelashes and a gold lamé-fringed cat suit. A woman who has a signature shade of red lipstick isn’t someone who’ll easily fall prey to fads.
Quirky, cute, funny, sassy, brassy, playful, even a little strange, the ladies with the red lips are the ultimate manic pixie dream girls. They love brightness and color and get bored with neutrals.
A woman who loves red lipstick is usually comfortable in a frilly apron baking a pineapple upside down cake. Think: 1950s housewives. Picture Mad Men-styled ladies. That’s us, right now, in real life — timeless anachronisms. Your mom and grandma will love us.
We’re off-beat and can have a sense of humor about it. Our passion for vivid hues is a metaphor for our passion for a vibrant life. Part of that is an ability to laugh and play, and genuinely have a good time without being hung-up and self-conscious about everything.
A scarlet smile is an indicator of an original personality and these types of women usually have an artistic bent. That means we love good music, great literature or movies that make a profound statement about the human experience. You might just learn something from us.
If you end up with a woman who loves red lipstick, don’t expect to listen to Justin Bieber and go to dinner at Olive Garden. Be ready for an unexpected adventure that might involve poetry, paintings or a meal that includes sea urchin.
Red lips make such a statement that you don’t need to do much else to look polished and pretty. A little moisturizer and mascara is often all it takes for me to be ready to go. Seriously, I can be out the door in less than five minutes.
We have the whole “lady in the street, freak in the sheets” thing down. We’re classy, we don’t kiss and tell, and I promise you, we know what we’re doing and we don’t have to advertise it too hard. Bonus: because we value our individuality so much, we won’t get clingy either.
Literally and figuratively. Don’t worry about us making a mess. We won’t get our red lipstick all over you… unless you’re into that sort of thing, and then we’re more than happy to oblige your fantasies. We understand that there’s a time and a place for everything. We like to glam it up, but we also love to go completely bare when the occasion calls for it.
