    Maybe not a programmer but I feel Takeshi Kitano (a.k.a. Beat Takeshi) deserves a mention here.

    He hates technology and video games, yet was the designer of the Japan-exclusive game 'Takeshi no Chōsenjō' (or Takeshi's Challenge.)


    Takeshi's Challenge was a notoriously punishing and shitty adventure game where you played a Japanese salaryman and had to follow a very specific set of options to even progress through the game without dying or losing everything. If you got a game over or reached a point in the game where it became unwinnable, you had to restart the game from the very beginning which could mean losing hours of progress.

    There were also some notoriously difficult sections such as the hang-gliding bit, and actually navigating the treasure cave. If you actually reached the goal at the end, an NPC will just murder you and take the treasure for himself. An NPC who you won't realise that you have to kill until after you start over again.

    But if you do finish the game, you are treated to an ending screen of Beat Takeshi's pixellated face saying "AMAZING" If you leave the game idle on this screen for a few minutes, that message turns into "You actually bothered to finish this crappy game? Sucker. Don't take it so seriously."

    I remember stumbling across the CD32 version of the humans 1 & 2 and when I put the CD into my pc drive I could tell the developer didn't care for the game or project.

    Hmm, I honestly thought the Doom bit was going to be about the 3DO version. You could do a whole episode about that story. The lady who had to program it was basically duped into the project, being told that the port was mostly finished, But she actually had to do the whole thing by herself on a horribly tight schedule. She was sleeping under her desk trying to get something that worked.
    Not to mention, there's the whole story of the guy who was funding the project. He seemed to think that with the rights to Doom he could create a better Doom that would blow it out of the water with almost no effort and little money. It's really a fascinating train-wreck to read about.

    I actually agree t some degree with that rant on Final Fight; I’ve never really found beat-em-ups to have the depth of fighters.

    Very good video, though I don't think the number one spot is completely fair. From that interview, it seems more that the programmer didn't really care about playing games, rather than outright despise them. It's a bit like a guitar maker who doesn't like playing guitar.

    In a way, I suppose that makes it worse. The opposite of love isn't hate, but indifference, as they say…

    Doing a bit of digging, here is Carmack's explanation when asked why he did this on Twitter:
    "I hated affine texture swim and integral quad verts, but in hindsight, I probably should have let experiment."

    Well, that last one explains a lot. It is a bummer that Saturn Doom could have been so much better. I wonder why Carmack was such a dick about it. The guy is a graphics nerd and an engineer at heart. He had to have had a reason.

    Just to clarify about Doom, Bagley's version used a method of doing the textures that caused the graphics to warp. It wasn't just Carmack decided to intentionally mess up the Saturn version of Doom, he just considered the warping textures unacceptable for the game. Carmack even admitted on twitter that he maybe should have let Bagley's version progress.

    i can kind of understand the reasoning behind crippling the doom port…doom was being given away for free on PC as a way to show that PC gaming could compete and surpass consoles. if they had released a much better looking and playing version for another system, then that would've defeated their own argument. they needed the PC version to be the best, and honestly, we might not have had some of the great games today if it hadn't been.
