The biggest reason that this game isn't being localised in english is because of the Holmes copyright issues. People are saying "well why not release only in x or y where there is no copyright problem?"

Here's why: The fact is that Ace Attorney isn't a huge series and it has been seeing lowered sales abroad even with titles like Dual Destinies or Spirit of Justice that release worldwide. With this in mind, if Capcom were to only choose some regions to release, this WILL lower sales tremendously compared to other titles abroad. Capcom still has to find money to localise, including translation, recoding and alterarions to the game to fit foreign norms and culture (things such as Americans generally being more opposing of a 15 year old character with a somewhat short skit than Japanese). To pay the cost of localisation for lowered sales is something Capcom wouldn't want to do as a company who must see profit margins.

People often point out the disparity between this game taking place in feudal Japan (at first) and the NA Ace Attorney games taking place in LA due to Capcom's weird localisation change of location but this isn't a problem really. Dai Gyakuten Saiban really doesn't address the modern day games and they don't refer to the DGS games so it's very easy for the English canon to be that Phoenix's ancestor came from feudal Japan and at some point down the descendant chain, the family moved to America and became the Wrights. None of this has to be said in game as the connection between Phoenix and Ryu isn't stated in the Japanese games either. This whole disparity is not a problem.

Now a new problem the game faces is the fact that the first game leaves mysteries unsolved that the second answers. Once Capcom takes the dive to localise the first game, they HAVE to follow through with the second or else the first game, frankly, isn't totally worth playing in english if you're only ever getting half a story. That means that even if the first game sells poorly abroad… they are almost forced to go through with the second and lose more.

It's a tough spot that Capcom and us fans are in but on the plus side, remember that there is still a way to play the Dai Gyakuten Saiban games in english.

You can purchase the mobile versions on the play store and then download the english patch online, created by a group of talented fans. They have completely translated the first game and have begun working on the second. Make sure you show your support and play these wonderful titles as well!

At least there's a fan translation now.

  9. Criticorn April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

So part of the reason we don't have this game is because people are too sensitive to accept racist statements which are accurate to the period this game represents? I hate this so much

Having played the game I don't remember Naruhodo being called a "yellow devil" or even just "yellow", whereas he was referred to as "nihonjin" (Japanese person) and "touyoujin" (Easterner). I do recall the line where one guy claims he finds it difficult to distinguish Japanese folk though.

  15. imaloony8 April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

They made a fucking sequel to this game. Another game in the series that we'll never get.

  16. AnimeWolfgamer April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

I'll never understand why historical accuracy is too sensitive for people in the west. Seriously people we learn from history not to repeat it and if the censorship continues, people will be doing it again. I hate America at times.

  17. Somefan April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

    There's a thing called "Name changing" y'know

  18. Darkbeast42 April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

Wait, isn't Capcom a Japanese company? Are they afraid that they'll be accused of being racist towards themselves? …that actually doesn't seem too far fetched considering what the internet is like.

  19. Zakrovik April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

Special circumstances huh? I guess the Great British Empire is at it again.

  21. Jarvey Rocks April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

I really want this game. I'm not a fan of Ace, but I am holmes. I need this.

  22. Jarvey Rocks April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

I'm sorry If people think CAPCOM is racist to the JAPANESE. Then they don't need to be playing this type of game. I'm just afraid their brain is gonna blow up from thinking to much.

  23. MrStGeorgeIllawarra April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

Seriously? Screw America and let the rest of the world have it.

  24. JoelsCoolDad April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

    softly sobs

  25. Scribble Toms April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

They could change Sherlock Holmes name, while keeping the characteristics the same.

Or, you know, release it in Europe and other English-speaking countries besides from America?! That would be at least the next best thing.

  26. narutoash111 April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

i think its due to the fact that they downgrade holmes since holmes is the famous detective of the time and the game makes him like an english gumshoe, which in essence is a mockery of the holmes legacy. thats where the legality of this games comes from.

  27. dan coster April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

I've heard that there was a reference made to those 10 stories in the game, so that could make them especially wary of releasing it

  28. LSSJ Gaming April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

I mean they could just rename Holmes

  29. Polar Bear April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

The one game of AA gimmicked with SHERLOCK HOLMES is only available in Japan? Say wut?

  30. Carter Herrigstad April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

Why thooooooooooo. We want this too

  31. Greg Sanders April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

They should just rename Sherlock to Herlock Sholmes. It would be a great through back to Maurice LeBlanc's Arsene Lupin Vs. Sherlock Holmes.

  32. Hajimeme Hinata April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

They could've changed Sherlock's name into Herlock Sholmes or something i dunno

  33. TNinja0 April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

    "People keep pirating our games!"
    Gee I wonder why

  34. Ristar the Shooting Star April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

If you can't have Holmes, have Holmes but change his name. His name is now Joey Stevenson or something I don't know think of a better one

  35. JCProfit April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

I am super upset that this was region locked.

  36. Smash 456 April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

When double standards is at its limit. Americans makes fun of Americans = OK!
Japanese makes fun of Japanese = RACIST!

  37. Dolphinboi April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am

Region locked because pussies and copyright…

  38. ECL28E April 16, 2019 at 1:41 am
