After the Fact: Get a Life!

“Fame and Misfortune” took aim at a lot of sensitive topics. Yet by looking at other fandoms, I begin to recognize a common criticism and hope as well.

OMG! Silver quill I love your videos. They are so informative yet entertaining, I adore your sense of humor. I am not the biggest MLP fan but your video make me wanna get binge watch this.

Nice video, and a well thought out discussion, I think it's time to reinstate the Please Please Pleese Get a Life Foundation.

U wanna know what's weird? I can see the song 'Flawless' in any media. Like Monster High, a episode of Power Rangers, or in a Disney movie.

I admit that one of the reasons why I liked this episode so much was the fact that the more negative elements of the fandom (to put it nicely) was one of the reasons I avoided MLP like the black plague until I finally decided to give it a fair shake in January of last year.

What I'm talking about is the kind of fans who would invade non-MLP forums & sites and not only start spamming MLP stuff, but would also drag all the fandom flame wars in with them, which would get the more zealous forum regulars up in arms (especially in the one LEGO forum I was in, since there's an extremist LEGO purist faction that boycotts ANY brand that makes clone bricks, which includes Hasbro), thus igniting a massive flame war until the moderator/admin teams can roll in with the ban-hammers.

Needless to say, that kind of thing, to an outside like I was, is EXTREMELY off-putting, and I like how this episode addressed it (and I love how Starlight was ready to go all Mafia enforcer on some of those ponies).

Unfortunately some of us fans aren't able to see the positive side of the fandom especially since most of us are only able to see the online side which lets be honest isn't an accurate representation. Yes we do see creators and all sorts of things but positivity is so rare that the episode is sadly a mirror of the fandom.

There were some points of the episode that were really funny and clever, and I get why some people loved it. For me though, it just felt too overwhelmingly negative. Yes, people can be overly-critical or unreasonably demanding, but there is a lot of good in the fandom. It felt like the writers were angry at the fandom. And the fact that even ponies who enjoyed the journal were painted negatively if they liked it for anything other than the morals felt like the show was trying to dictate how we should react. It just felt too mean-spirited for me.

I remember there was an episode of after the fact where you gave a quote involving the word "equilibrium." It was from a book. What book was it again? I can't remember and I don't know what episode it was.
    Does anybody remember?

I still say Maud is pointless

Personally I feel like the fandom has done a lot for me, getting to meet all the awesome people and making incredible friends is just amazing. I can't wait to talk about this episode once we get to it =D

Your videos are very heart warming

I don't think Starlight meant that everyone else should be resented.

See,that's what I do. I respect others opinions even if I disagree with it. Mostly because,it's their opinion so I could really care less about it if they have any impact on me. Yet whenever I try to express my opinion or an idea in the world (not just the communities I'm in but also real life),people tell me to shut up,and that my opinion doesn't matter,or more accurately they don't listen to me. That leads me to wonder if what I said was said in the right way,or if it was because I'm female that I wouldn't know what to do for a class project. I never know because they don't explain it to me because they act like I'm not there. It sucks. And makes me wonder if I really make an impact on the world. But I tell myself that I WILL make an impact. Just not yet. Eventually. Who knows,it could happen tomorrow and we may never know.

To be honest, this episode made me feel a bit insecure. Of course then I realized not all of the fandom is like this! Sure there will be a few flame Wars over who is best pony or who is best princess, but isn't that true for almost every fandom?

  14. Andrew Meyer August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

Well done, couldn't have said it better myself!

  15. Takisan111 August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

as the saying goes, when all you look for is the bad stuff, your view of the world is soured. Go out there and find some news on the GOOD side of the world.

  18. Andrew Meyer August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

1:06 Wait, what? Wow, I honestly didn't notice that before. That's a great little detail. Makes the episode even better IMO.

  19. Log Horizon August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

Well said mister quill now my question is who in MLP and the brony fandom would be a gundam pilot?

  20. Winter Wind August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

Hey Silver if you're at Crystal Fair STL this year I would love to chat and if your a duelest I challenge you to a duel.

  21. pichugirl6 August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

Love the message, silverquill. I was surprised how in the episode there was no Spike fans given he did wrote in a few morals, then again it was focusing on just the main 6.

  22. Marc Shimpar August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

I think you're going about this the wrong way. It isn't about incorrect opinions, or criticizing the audience for criticizing the show. It's that they take something like MLP and complain and nitpick about the wrong thing – the whole point of the show, the friendship.

The flawless song wasn't about the fans at all – it was a celebration of the characters who, in spite of being a show teaching kids about friendship, it has these complex, flawed characters as role models.

Also the Pinkie Pie and Applejack thing is something someone always asks the show staff on like twitter or something

  23. CURTIS TWITCHELL August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

Why does this review sound like a good bye? In any case. I'm glad to hear from Silver Quill again.

  26. Havioc Darkmoon August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

ill admit when i first saw this episode i thought of it very negativity but after watching Dr wolfs video and now this one i can see more on what they were trying to do and on some ways this one gave me more incite and thought it isnt my favorite episode of this session i can at least see it for what it is and enjoy it more then in did after first watching it

  27. Channing Pappe August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

Good, thoughtful, and humorous video as usual. Nothing more to say other than good work part chicken horse.

  28. The Rose Alchemist August 29, 2017 at 12:39 am

As always a good review Silver! My friend and I watched the episode on the drive home from Bronycon and it created by far the greatest discussion we had about the show. I have met both sides of the spectrum while I myself like to keep off to the side cause I find it more fun there. Regardless it was fun to meet you, Maddie, and Lightning Bliss at Bronycon! Hopefully next time I am there for more than just one day.

silver i want to share something with you. i used to be a die hard antibrony. i hated the idea of a girls show being so popular and beyond my comfort zone/ 5 eps into season 1 my gf forced me to watch a few eps with her. from then on my life was transformed, the very idea of a group who want you to just be you was beyond anything i ever experience. i was the crippled kid growing up so scorn and mockery was all i knew. but the fans of this show showed me a diff world. now im proud to be a brony, im proud to be a part of a fanbase who will never tell you what you should be. im proud to be who i am and im proud to be part of a fanbase who has such fun people as you. brohoof
