After the Fact: The Cutie Re-Mark

A season finale that signaled a large shift in the show. Some loved it, some hated it. Let’s take a look at Twilight and Starlight’s battle through time. Oh, and Spike’s there too.

I was half expecting that final line to be "nailed it" because you did say at the beginning that's how you wanted to go. In a massive time combustion event.

Mentioning the Digimon shipping wars…ohhh yeah, that takes me back. At least MLP is generally civil in its ships…usually.

I know that the season 5 finale was about 4 years ago at this point, but I want to state something here. The only problem I had with Starlight Glimmer wasn't her character traits, her reformation, or how she was written in season 6 and whatnot, but that her backstory wasn't really… fleshed out enough.

Something felt missing. There had to be more to her backstory than just being left behind by Sunburst.

Like, ok. Here’s how I thought Starlight Glimmer’s story should’ve been. Follow along if you’re

    interested in well… following along.

Starlight Glimmer had a really rough childhood. In her hometown, in the days as a blank flank, she

was the only child with no cutie mark (well… seemingly). Because of this, she was heavily taunted, ridiculed, and given from her peers cruel statements such as, “You’re inferior because you don’t have a cutie mark!”, Hahaha! We have cutie marks and you don’t! We’re special and you’re not!” and other awful remarks (similar to the CMC’s situations with Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon but harsher). Hearing this led her to depression and sadness for a while until she met Sunburst, who like her, was also, a blank flank, and very friendly. They both became friends and did a lot things together until one day when Sunburst saved Starlight from a lot of books falling on her with his magic, he got his cutie mark, and then leaves Starlight behind for school. Doing this gave Starlight huge grief and misery and

a twisted, fixed-on perspective on cutie marks which she uses one day on a village of ponies.

If her backstory went like that, it would make a better understanding of why she did what she did than

what they established in the show. It connects more to her removing the cutie marks with equal signs and brainwashing the villagers, including the Mane 6, and traveling through time to stop the sonic rainboom from happening. Does that mean what she faced in her childhood justifies her behaviors and actions? Absolutely not. However, I would feel a lot more for her than just, “Oh no! He left me because he got a cutie mark. Now I must dictate and control a village of ponies!” That just sounds ridiculous to me.

There's always the alternative route! Aka DEATH STAR (oh wait wrong timeline)

Very good analysis. Minus the Tone at the end, it was well thought out and involved.

Turns to Professor Farnsworth Welp, Silver broke the Universe again. Time to cycle back through. Gets in time machine, goes through the Big Bang right up until 1940 something Just slow this thing down, I'll shoot Hitler out the window. Darn, I hit Eleanor Roosevelt instead.

13:24 – On the topic of discord, I’d say that his shift over Fluttershy’s friendship makes a lot of sense to me, because in a way, Discord is a lot like me… Explaining everything would take forever due to certain similarities and complexities, so moving onto the part that matters:

Discord appears to not have had any friends prior to Fluttershy (or we haven’t seen any info to the contrary) and as a result, he is extremely protective of that friendship, nearing obsession. He doesn’t want to lose that friendship, even if it means changing himself.
Why is that? Presumably (using my own experiences) because in a way he knows he’s different, that he’s hard to get along with, and now that he has others that actually care about him – or at the very least, are willing to try – he doesn’t want to lose that feeling; it’s like a drug to him, and even if he tried to ignore it, he’s different now… In short, he’s felt friendship – true friendship – and he’s terrified of losing it.

Thinking about it, Starlight makes sense in a way too. She lost a friend, and – knowing what we now know – that fear of losing someone else prevented her from making another friend.

Are those entirely healthy ways of life? Of course not! But that’s the thing – fear isn’t always a healthy feeling. Is it good? Of course! It’s there to protect you… But there are also the fears that don’t make sense.

… I really should stop getting into analising things in the comments section. It always turns into a massive comment XD
I’m honestly protective of discord, really XD

The alternate future thing still would've been more interesting if the Pillars never banished the Sirens.

Those scenes where Starlight was spying were easy to miss.

Wish Celestia in Luna's timeline was trapped in the Sun. Tho, it wouldn't be day time, to see that, anyways…

  19. Mistydolphin March 23, 2019 at 8:24 am

Ok, I guess Rainbow Dash is Krillin from dbza now. Also, there's 1 thing I have to wonder… In each timeline, where is the Twilight of each one? Is she just elsewhere, or did our Twilight take her alternate selves' place? Something to think on.

To this day, I say Starlight's reasons for going evil were both stupid and selfish

To your point about the issues with the alternate timelines, and if anyone stopped the previous villains before that timeline Twilight ends up in. They do show that, yes, these villains were stopped. It's very quick, but when you see the Discord timeline, Celestia and a reformed Luna are trying to stop him. This implies that Celestia was able to stop her sister when she returned, and reform her. This also implies that Celestia was the one who stopped the villains when they rose up. Which also implies that her power is enough to stop big villains, yet not reliable as she failed sometimes, but succeeded others.

This actually becomes an interesting topic maybe deserves a supplement video. Was Celestia simply failing to stop major threats so Twilight could step up? If she had the power to stop these villains in alternate timelines, then why didn't she show this power before? Or any time on screen?
