Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan Reveal Daughter’s Chinese Name

If you had any doubt that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was multitalented, here’s more proof: He speaks Mandarin.

Zuckerberg showed off his linguistic skills in a new video posted to Facebook Saturday, in which he and wife Priscilla sit beside their 2-month-old daughter, Max, who is clad in a traditional red and gold dress with red booties that jingle.

“Happy New Year,” Zuckerberg says in the video, which has racked up more than a million views, 168,000 shares, and thousands of comments. “Priscilla and I are very excited to celebrate our first Lunar New Year with Max.”

“We hope on this holiday, you are also spending it with your family and friends,” adds Chan.

“This is also a meaningful holiday for Max because we have chosen her Chinese name,” says Zuckerberg. “Her name is Chen Mingyu. Chen after her mother’s family name. And Mingyu represents our hope for a brighter tomorrow for the world.”

According to CNN, the word “ming,” meaning bright, combines with “yu,” which means universe. And the name Max was most likely chosen to honor Zuckerberg’s paternal great-grandfathers, Max Zuckerberg and Marcus “Max” Hollander, per Ancestory.com.

“From our little family to yours, we wish you health and prosperity in the New Monkey Year!” wraps up Chan. Zuckerberg then looks down at Max and says, “Happy New Year! You think my Chinese is bad?”

Like any proud parent, Zuckerberg has been filling his feed with shots of his baby. On Jan. 24, he posted a photo of the duo in a swimming pool, Max floating on her back. “Max’s first swim. She loves it!” he captioned the shot.

Facebook fans also virtually tagged along to Max’s pediatrician appointment, where she received her first vaccinations. And in December, in anticipation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Zuckerberg dressed his daughter as a mini Luke Skywalker, flanking her with a Darth Vader mask, Chewbacca, BB-8, and a lightsaber.
