Parkland Survivor Jayden Bier: ‘I Can’t Imagine Any Parent Who Has To Go Through This’ | PeopleTV

Jayden Bier, a 17-year-old junior, would have been in one of the classrooms that was shot up except for a teacher who innocently redirected her elsewhere to resume taking a test before the shooting began, she recalls in the video above. “All of a sudden I hear someone say, ‘Run for your life, code red.’ I just freeze, and my friend says, ‘Jayden, grab my hand and don’t let go of it,’ ” she says. “There were people screaming everywhere, ‘Let me in!’ People banging on doors, and my teacher actually let six people in the classroom. … I went into the closet with my friend and we were just still holding hands. We were both crying and people were telling us, ‘Why are you guys crying? This is fake,’ and I knew it wasn’t.”

In the days and weeks afterward, as students and families grieved and returned to class, many of the teens who attend the Parkland, Florida, high school have been speaking out about their experiences and demanding there be changes in gun safety legislation so that something like this can never happen again.

I can't even watch these interviews from these narcissistic, emotionally detached individuals….they talk about "heartbreak"….and there so emotionally dead inside, that they don't even know what it means…they know the words, the right phrases to say, but they have absolutely NO emotion behind their words….they are a generation of emotionally detached beings….you can take any of these interviewees, change their role with the shooter, and all the components are still there, and no one would be surprised, this young girl could easily switch places with the shooters role, and we'd never know the difference between the two, because both individuals are narcissistic, emotionally dead inside individuals….and that's the most frightening part…..the shooter could of been any one of these students….the next shooter could be your child!….do you know your child well enough?…..because you parents, knowing your own children well enough…..is the ONLY way these senseless shootings will stop…..KNOW YOUR CHILD!

Does no one else realize how stupid schools are for things like this though?!?! They have all these presentations for these things but never realize that the school shooters come from… the school. Show showing us all these drills are showing potential school shooters exactly what we are doing so they know exactly what to do. I know i’m not the only one who’s though about that

When you’re at school and you see your friends run in and say there’s an active shooter, you laugh. This is Southern California but this kind of thing doesn’t happen in your part of SoCal.

It’s not until you hear the kind woman at the front desk go on the intercom and say, “This is not a drill, active shooter alert.” That’s when the lights go off and tables are flipped as protection.

You feel your heart stop when your teacher tells you “Call your families and tell them you love them.” You start crying as you call your mom up to let her know what’s going on. You text your closest friends and family members “Active shooter, I love you.” because you lost the ability to speak coherently.

You never heard the shots fired but you hear the wailing of sirens as word gets out. Eventually, the LAPD and sheriffs’ department come on campus with dogs. You know you’re safe now but you’re still scared deep down.

As the hours go by during the lockdown and after you’re released from school, you check social media. The other high schools have gone in to lockdown. Many of them are having fun, laughing, and joking around.

Walking out, you immediately look for your mom. Once you see her, you hug her and your pug tight. Next are your friends: you hug and cry and thank God they are safe. The news swarm you all, taking pictures and asking questions. You just want to go home though, the only place that screams out safety.

The first day back is hard. You go through your first class fine but end up breaking down and panicking at your second. You desperately wait for your mom to come as friends comfort you. Their words fall on deaf ears as you relive the trauma.

For a week afterwards, you regress into a child. You lug around your beloved pink teddy you’ve had for 12 years. She kept you safe from the monsters in the dark: now she protects you from the ones in human form. People stare at you in public for doing so but you look at them with eyes that can only see that day.

Short-term PTSD: it’s what you got after the shooting. It consumes you for months afterwards. You win against it…or so you think. The residual effects still linger to this day.

Cops are always minuets away when seconds count. The most absolutely effective way to stop a bad guy with a gun is having a good guy with a gun. That's in the moment, I agree there should be reasonable restrictions on gun ownernership but not intrusive measures. We can only restrict felons and mentally ill. To restrict it further is to punish people not for what they have done but for what they might do, that's not freedom. Tragedy must never triumph in taking our freedom.

The fact that they were having drills before the shooting Is most likely to prevent something like this from happening. They should start new drills that include what to do in case of A shooting. They need reinforced windows on the doors and the doors themselves. And better security that are trained or at least tazers.

  23. Emma Is Pale December 3, 2018 at 1:16 pm

Just gonna say, I’ve had something happen to me in the category but it doesn’t even compare to this. I did have to text my mom to say I love you and that there was a shooting across the street at the school, and we didn’t know at the time but it was someone screwing around with guns but I was just getting ready for a football game (I’m a cheerleader) and I had to drop everything and sprint through the school. For what I felt, I can’t believe what they went through. I’ve been praying for them and will continue to. God bless their families.

Literally what has are world come too ..

  32. Luna Lovegood December 3, 2018 at 1:16 pm

Emma should not have gotten so much attention. She is not a survivor. None of the main faces of MFOL are. They were all in different buildings from the actual shooter. These are the survivors. These are the stories we should be hearing.
