i still stand behind Witcher 3 being held back by clunky combat system and made it unplayable for me.

  3. Banana Child July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Wait, "The Simpsons" was a family-friendly tv show? What timeline am I living in here?

  4. juice hedgehog July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Hmm, interesting, so the awful boxart that got people's attention was intentional? Well it sure got the job done!

  5. Joshua Mackenzie July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

What game is that at the start with the top less guy in the jungle?

  6. ignacio valles July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

I don’t think the Simpsons is kid friendly

  7. Forever Zero July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

They wanted to stand out with a man playing the banjo… That sounds like something Sony would do for the E3

  8. Foster Wood July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

As soon as they mentioned Phalanx I knew they were gonna mention the boxart.

  9. Matthew Wells July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

    FLCL references South Park to.

  10. castleboat July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

theres got to be some book references hidden in games too right

  11. Khanman July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Just Cause 2 had a Lost reference

  12. joshwhite83 July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

The box art for Phalanx turned me off of the game entirely as a kid and I unfortunately never tried it because of that. I never even picked up the game to see what it was all about because the artwork always made me think it was something totally different from what it actually was. Not sure if it was the same for others, but in my case, their marketing strategy completely failed.

Witcher 3 has also a reference to Asterix & Obelix, a french comic series which is very popular in Europe specifically. In the Blood & Wine addon you have a quest where you need to get a document A38 in a state beareau. In one of the movies Asterix & Obelix have to complete 10 difficult quests, one of them being to get the document A38, which can be found in "The house that makes crazy people". It's a huge joke on state beareaus and offices where you have to stand in line forever and nobody really cares and you get sent from A to B to C and back again and have to fill out form X to get document Y so you can get the formular to even inquire about Z and so on. Witcher 3 emulates that, but also allows you to very quickly just manipulate someone with magic to get document A38.

I just want to take a moment and thank the script writer for referring to the Ace Attorney series by its proper name and not fucking "Phoenix Wright" like the rest of the internet.

  15. nfugitt89 July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Gypsy didn't watch the movies and Mike Nelson was better than Joel

  16. Will Huey July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

actually he got that simpsons fact wrong its sideshow bob roberts not reynolds

  17. Piezonuclear Luna July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

    FIRST!

  18. TrolleyMouse July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

    Sideshow Bob Roberts, not Reynolds.

  19. Kaz Avian July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Oh boy, a reference to the TRADIS? in a VIDEO GAME?!

Whats next, are you going to tell me there are DarkSouls Bonfire references in other video games? Preposterous.

  20. karnovrpg July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Rest in peace Bertil Valley, may you forever be strumming the banjo while battling aliens in space.

  21. Jacob Anderson July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

I remember seeing phalanx in the store as a kid and it always caught my attention, but the box art didnt really make me want to buy the game and the word phalanx meant nothing to me, and all the games were behind glass in locked cases so i couldnt pick it up and look at the back or anything. i loved shumps and would probably have liked the game, but i never knew what it was.

  22. Xeo7 July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

I think that Ace Attorney reference is a little vague. Bags of Holding and pocket dimensions in ordinary items are a pretty common sci-fi trope, and have been for decades.

  23. EnderMcCloud July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

I'm sorry? Did you say Simpsons was a "family friendly" show? In what universe? I'm not saying it should be played only on HBO or anything, but my mom and several families I knew growing up, and even now, did not or will not allow it in their house.

  24. MaddestMike July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Not to mention the Koopa Bros. from Paper Mario, essentially a spoof of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

  25. raafmaat July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

its cute that you thought the wheeping angels thing originated in Dr Who 😀

  26. TheCreepypro July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

blows my mind that there are south park fans in japan but I guess there are stranger things in the world than that

  27. CrazySeanDX July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Can anyone explain that clip with the "Found" Achievement near the beginning around 0:14?

  28. omnislasher99 July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

I'm American and I've NEVER pronounced Phalanx as (FAY-lanks)

  29. ManicallyMetal July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Dr who didn’t invent the idea of weeping angels though

  30. Flux_Time July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

mst3k is also on twitch @rifftrax or something they mainly stream at like 1 am

  31. James P July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

hirofumi taniguchi probably was just watching south park in the background and forgot it was on while he was recording.

  32. noisyturtle July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Witcher 3 probably packs in more pop culture references than any other game.

  33. gimmjoww/HKX July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

    Comix Zone ending yeah.

  34. Michael Mathers July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

isn't Dr. Demento a real life radio guy, and The Simpsons was referencing that?

  35. deboshadow July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

    MST3k forever

  36. Johnny Cage July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Well Dr.Demento should also be known for “Weird Al”.

  37. KatlikeRider July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

I remember a trailer for some DS/3DS RPG (by ATLAS, I think) referencing the webcomic Homestuck by naming some party members after characters (more accurately the trolls) from the webcomic.

  38. Linkn 216 July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

The Rabbit's Cave from Monty Python and The Holy Grail is also in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

  39. Zachary Scovel July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

The first time I learned people in Japan knew about South Park it was my first time watching FLCL.

  40. PoisoNico93 July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

What I learned from this episode; Santa is dead!
    Thanks DYKG.

  41. Sharpevil July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Taking a reference out of an Ace Attorney localization is cheap. They stuffed those games full of references whenever they could find room. A clown character even bursts out into a high-speed altered version of the opening to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air at one point when he was pushed too far on the stand.

  42. Tetra Sky July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

There's fucking Weeping Angels in The Witcher 3!? … Glad I dropped that game.

  43. MotherKojiro July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

A little more obscure, but in Septerra Core, there's a part where Grubb's robots are reprogrammed and take over the town, and he calls out the override code that he built in: THX-1138, which is an old George Lucas film.

  44. Lan July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

That game at the end! Wow i forgot its title but thats very nostalgic. The main character had a pet rat named Roadkill. That much I remember

  45. Edwin Cheesecake July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

Don't change your pronunciation based on YouTube or Twitter comments. I say "sem eh tree". Nobody is pronouncing anything "correctly" anymore anyway. As long as you can be understood by most people, it's good enough.

If people complain, just tell them they have to start pronouncing the "k" in words like "knight" and "knee".

  46. Dr _ Nomz July 12, 2018 at 3:03 am

0:16 Found! 😀 I loved that show. ^_^ Even if it made no fucking sense whatsoever. ಠ_ಠ

    Still, what game is that?
