Surprising fact about the iPhone 7 Plus telephoto lens

The iPhone 7 Plus comes with two cameras: a wide angle camera for 1x operation and a telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom. Except, when it doesn’t. The telephoto lens is not always used in 2x mode. This video explains why.

If you cover the wide angle lense while using the telephoto lense, the image will become over exposed to the point the screen looks white

Do you think that telephoto lens will work for a concert scene? Coz I need it for that. Like I'm 50 feet away from the main stage.

One other note though many third party camera apps with manual controls allow you to chose which lens you shoot with, so it's not automatically chosen by the lighting. My primary photo/video app which does allow you to chose is ProCam 4. Another few I know allow you to switch are Manual(which is a 1x and 2x but it always switches to the telephoto when you switch to the 2x as well as another called Focus. Also I'm guessing some of the reason that it stays on the wide angle regular lens in lower lighting is because it's the lens that has OIS on it. The other lens doesn't have stabilization. OIS in low light helps get a better image allowing for an automatic longer exposure that's stabilized to get a better image.

My telephoto lens isn't activating even in bright light

  21. Soniboy84 November 28, 2017 at 5:06 am

it's really dumb, why not let the user decide if he/she wants to use to use the telephoto in low lit environment?

Sorry mate but not really correct. Made the same mistake myself when first got the phone. THE TELEPHOTO LENS IS ONLY ACTIVE WHEN IN PORTRAIT MODE. That 2x zoom is just a quick zoom feature for the wide angle lens as can be noticed if keep finger down can move up or down to zoom in and out more. If you cover the Telephoto lens and try portrait mode, than it will be black cuz is covered up. You were correct in the lighting department as low light does suck in portrait mode (or TELEPHOTO LENS MODE).

  30. Ahmed Reda November 28, 2017 at 5:06 am

I knew that the portrait-mode did not work in dim conditions, and now I know why. Thanks!

  32. NAiF JaMaLi November 28, 2017 at 5:06 am

  33. Karlcountry ! November 28, 2017 at 5:06 am

There are 3rd party apps that give you more options as well as raw capabilities.

  34. Cryonic Two3 November 28, 2017 at 5:06 am

  36. Jeremy JMIAH Williamson November 28, 2017 at 5:06 am

  40. THe cRazies November 28, 2017 at 5:06 am

I was freaking out. thanks a lot bro! even ppl in apple support dont know about this.

  41. Allister Bah November 28, 2017 at 5:06 am

But it may be switching to a mode which uses a combination of wider aperture from the wide angle & optical zoom from the telephoto. It may not mean it only uses the wide angle? What about setting up in a low light situation again, and taking 2 photos, one with the telephoto covered & the other both lens uncovered. Then comparing both photos to check for the pixel quality while enlarged. Then we'll see whether the telephoto was used in a dark environment.
