The Associated Press has confirmed that legendary musician Prince has died at Paisley Park, his home in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Although the cause of death has not yet been confirmed, Prince’s representatives stated earlier this month that the 57-year-old artist was battling the flu, and he was hospitalized in Illinois on April 7th after canceling two concerts.
The world loses a true artist and musical genius in Prince, whose melding of funk, rock, and R&B influenced a generation of musicians, and all but birthed the neo-soul genre. He’s one of the best-selling artists of all time, having sold over 100 million albums worldwide. There’s few people under the age of 50 who don’t have a favorite Prince jam.
His style, like his music, was a fearless mix. His outlandish, androgynous fashion was totally unique and unbeholden to traditional views of masculinity. He was the sexiest man in pumps you’ve ever seen, and a rock star, composer, and lyricist like no other. He will be deeply missed by the world.
Ahead, we pay tribute to some of The Purple One’s most iconic looks. Viva Prince.
