What Happened To This Former Italian Village Is Tragic, But You Can Still Explore The Ruins
Without knowing the full story, you might be taken aback by the sight of a lone bell tower in the middle of a beautiful lake.
When the power company finally got permission to build Lake Resia, all of the surrounding villages, including Graun, fought the decision. They were eventually overruled and all of the villages were demolished. The only thing that was permitted to remain was Graun’s bell tower to serve as a memorial.
Now visitors to the lake can admire its beauty, along with a magnificent view of the Italian Alps.
You can even walk out to the old bell tower during the winter when the lake freezes over.
According to local legend, every so often the church bell will ring despite the bell having been removed for the last 60 years.
