Sprucing up your eyebrows can instantly pull your look together-which is why you may already fill them in with a pencil each morning. But now, there’s a new method for achieving thick, defined eyebrows without having to carve out time in your everyday routine: Eyebrow microblading.
While permanent makeup isn’t a new idea, it has traditionally been applied using a machine. "You don’t have as much control with a permanent makeup machine because it vibrates, so the strokes are going to be blurrier," professional makeup artist Piret Aava told Allure.
Microblading is a more long-term solution that has been gaining popularity for its ability to achieve a more natural look. This technique uses a pen-like tool to apply pigment underneath the skin, so that it looks like hair. "Hairs" are basically drawn on one-by-one with tiny needles. Different shades of colors are used based on your hair color and skin pigment, matching your natural brows as closely as possible.
If you’re worried about pain, don’t fear: A numbing cream is applied before treatment followed by a liquid anesthetic. The whole process will then take a few hours to complete. Nadia says to avoid places that promise microblading in under an hour because the technique requires attention to detail to be done right. Both pros recommend clients come back about a month after their initial treatments to have any touch ups applied. But once your look is complete, it will last from one to three years. If that’s not convincing enough, we’ll let the results speak for themselves…
