Meet Shalom Nchom, a 20-year-old beauty blogger from Nigeria.
When she was 9 years old, Shalom, who goes by Shalom Blac on YouTube, was severely burned with frying oil in an accident at her family’s store. She suffered severe burns to her head, face, and neck.
Shalom was not only left with physical damages from her accident, she also had to endure extreme emotional abuse from bullies at middle school who tormented her. The harassment got so bad that at one point, she even wanted to kill herself.
"I remember one day just taking a knife, going into the bathroom, and looking at myself, wondering why people don’t like me and why they see a monster," she shared in an interview with Cosmopolitan.com. Eventually, she started gaining more confidence in herself.
When she was 13, she started watching makeup tutorials on YouTube and picking up the craft as a way to make herself feel better about her looks. Years later, she has her own channel where she uses her platform to showcase her makeup transformations and to inspire her fans to love themselves – with or without makeup.
"I feel like this was my calling. I’m just glad that my story can actually inspire someone enough for them to realize their life is worth living," she said.
Shalom’s story is an amazing reminder to love yourself, no matter the circumstances, and that true beauty radiates from the inside.
