    The milk one was supposed to be used on linen, not cotton, and the milk was probably slightly different then

    100 years ago they didn't have ballpoint pens, and they used a different type of ink, also, silk being a different density than cotton could make a difference. If the milk took out that much of the ink from cotton, then it is safe to say, with the different ink and method of staining, meaning not forced into the fabric by the ball of the pen, that this works.
