    Okay… Let's be honest.

    America wasn't trying to win.

There was no clear goal. There was no true plan outside of supporting allies.
And the U.S could have thrown so much more power into the war.
    Why didn't they?

Because they already knew going in, that the war was pointless.
America had lied to its own people just to get involved. Politicians were feeding American citizens with a phobia of communism. Fearmongering people into supporting the war.

Eventually the false fear wasn't enough. Common sense was telling the people the war was useless. And the Americans pressured their government until it relented, and the U.S abandoned Vietnam.

They were never trying to win.

There were'nt any fronts in Vietnam. They never were any plans to push into Hanoi and win the war. New soldiers who were super patriotic, saw immediately what was going on, and after the 2nd day they were there, became very disenchanted.

Somehow the Vietnam War is kinda similar to the battle of Stalingrad, cause all the advantages of the German were ineffective during the battle when fighting in the city which bogged them down. Vietnamese Jungle was a drastically disadvantage for the US where tanks + mechanized troops were little effectively, VC + NVA took the advantage and slowly defeat the US morale which finally get them completely out of the war, even though suffered high casualties.
