In the run up to Breath of the Wild, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, easter eggs and history of Zelda’s Ganon. Ganon, also known as Ganondorf, has been with The Legend of Zelda since its inception. Ganon became more relateable when he was given a more human form, which has been present in everything from Ocarina of Time to Super Smash Bros Melee (ssbm). In our analysis of the character’s history, the series lore, and beta zelda games, we discovered that Ocarina was once planned to be more like Super Mario 64, and that Ganon’s monologue at the end of Twilight Princess was going to be much longer.

"Well, I started thinking to myself, 'What kind of guy is worth defeating?' The enemies you feel best about defeating are the ones that outclass you in every way, from abilities to experience. He also had to be an appealing character, even though he was the enemy. […] He initially looked like a brute who had nothing but raw strength. I wanted him to have clever eyes so you know he was a man of high caliber." -Satoru Takizawa

Wait! Nintendo planned to have Link climb a giant form of Ganon to strike his weak point in Ocarina of Time? Sounds like Team Ico stole someone's canceled ideas.

Is there any significance regarding the various designs' ears? Some older games like Ocarina and this vid at 3:06 show him, and the gerudo in general, as having rounded human-like ears rather than the pointed elven ones which are more commonly seen (Hylian, Sheikah, Kokiri, Twili, early Rito, and so on). Perhaps an error nobody caught during development and stuck around for lack of immediate retcon?

If it was intentional, I wonder if it has anything to do with the recent social change seen among the gerudo with regards to seeking men outside their tribe. About that– maybe I misunderstood, but during OoT it seemed to me that the gerudo would only have one male born every 100 years or so, and that he'd become their king; which I understood as having a second meaning in a sense of leading a harem, essentially. It didn't make much sense to me, though, since he'd have to stick around for the next 100 years, (or so, as "100 this" and "1,000 that" are exaggerations that get thrown around carelessly– grain of salt) until an heir came around. After all, kicking the bucket early would mean the gerudo would die out, unless they started seeking out men beyond of their society… which I guess may explain what's going on in BotW.

I wonder if we'll ever see another male gerudo in the storyline, for better or worse. Could have potential for a very interesting character if that guy were to be on the up-and-up, Ganondorf's some nasty negative association to live down.

  25. John Littrell October 9, 2017 at 12:18 am

I kind of felt bad for Ganondorf in Wind Waker. He just wanted to live in a lively and peaceful land.He talked about how the winds in his land only brought death and that he longed for the wind bringing life in Hyrule.
